Sliding Block Shophouse
Mixed-Use Building
The Sliding Block Shophouse is located on the corner of Gillett Square, London designed to have a relationship throughout shops to apartments. The Sliding Block Shophouse allows for interactions through small owned shops with connections to their own
apartments above. This building is designed throughout 10x10x10 grids establishing the formation of walls and perimeters of placement. A 5x5 grid is determining the furniture placement.
In the Sliding Block Shophouse there are three locally owned shops which are a women’s shoes store, a sock shop, and a make your own tea store, which are located on the ground level, above these shops there are four separate apartments, two on the second level and two more on the third level. The women’s shoe store and sock shop are located facing Gillett Square where they have access to the second floor apartments, there are a
separate staircase in these two shops that are located behind the register counter allowing for a residence to only have access to. Behind these two shops is the make you own tea store which is facing the street of Bradbury, it is the same size as the two shops put together, the make your own tea store has access through a staircase to the adjacent building where visitors could come
through. Designing the tea store larger allows for a more open space for customers to walk and socialize throughout the building. Going up to the second level the two apartments are provided with an outdoor balcony and bbq that is an attachment through
the kitchen counter and one bedroom. On the third level, these two apartments have two separate sleeping areas on the opposite areas on the space. The fourth floor is an area for communal use to the four apartment owners, it is provided with rooftop courtyard and ping pong table facing Gillett square, on the back end of the fourth level there is a balcony overlooking Bradbury street with
counter space for your choice of a bar or kitchen area.
The main purpose for this building, was designed to have the residence more involved throughout their shops as well as the other residences allowing for private space as well.
